As discussed in the previous post that with the advancement and enhancement in the technology, modern day television is way more forward and advanced than the traditional Television viewing. Here we’re discussing about Netflix today. This Giant has come to India now a few years back. Those who want to stay at home and watch good TV series or Movies with premium quality content and are not hesitant to pay for it, it is definitely for them. You have got to pay for the premium and exclusive content that you cannot experience on your cable TV or satellite TV.
But what about those who want to experience it all and that too without paying a single penny? Yes, there are options available for them too. Might be temporary but yes they are available. We are going to know about them in this post.
Netflix is a Giant player in the field of Digital revolution. It is a very popular name in the Digital world and the Internet. For those of you who don’t know about Netflix, It is a Video on Demand (VOD) platform. The only revolutionary company of the entertainment industry that has a huge library of online streaming content. Anywhere, anytime with the only exception of a great Internet speed on your device when you’re on the go and yes this applies too when you watch it at home. And secondly, the subscription. You don’t have to download the videos; you can only stream them to watch.

Netflix started because of late fee – While returning the DVD a little late to Blockbuster they charged Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, a late fee fine. This motivated him and his partner to start their own company that will not ask customers for the late fee. So Netflix, the brand Netflix, originally started on April of 1998. Before that it was just the rental service provider.
Turned down by Blockbuster to buy it – Netflix was experiencing the loss of money for mailing the DVDs from US Postal Services. So it offered Blockbuster to buy Netflix for $50 million so that they will manage the online business and Blockbuster would take care of the mailing section. But Blockbuster refused the offer. And the irony is that a few years later Blockbuster struggled to evolve in the internet economy. From 9000 stores in 2004 to only 9 in 2017. It filed for bankruptcy in 2010. While Netflix evolved and expanded inside and outside of the US.
Kibble was the initial name – The founders of Netflix originally named it Kibble. It wasn’t planned for permanent basis so after working on names they came up with Netflix. Also, when they separated their DVD and streaming business they named the former one “Quikster”. It wasn’t well received by the public so they removed it too.
How much spent in creating Original content? – The amount that was spent in 2018 was $12billion and expected up to $15billion in 2019!!
‘Lillehammer’ is not the debut of Netflix – Yes, as Wikipedia says it was the 1st web series by Netflix in 2012. It’s true because it’s series. But before any of these series hit the streaming service Netflix used an 11 minute long video to test how successfully the high definition streaming runs on its platform. It was name “Example show”. It featured moon walking, juggling, models trains etc. Below is the video, posted by a user on YouTube, that Netflix uploaded on their servers for the very first time to test the quality and other things. Also, it is a $ 141 billion company with over 130 million subscribers worldwide.
Competition and challenges for Netflix
Netflix isn’t the only company that provides streaming service. It is in competition with other Giants like Amazon, HBO and Hulu (not available in India).
Disney is going to pull all its content from Netflix and create its own streaming service platform. Disney has also acquired 21st Century Fox film and TV assets.
Apple is also going to start its streaming service soon too with creation of original content.
So to beat the competition Netflix has to produce good exclusive content. The company is already spending massive amounts of money in production.

It offers 4 types of plans and the video quality is according to those plans. These plans are:

Standard Plan: Rs650/- per month; video quality - HD
Premium Plan: Rs800/- per month; video quality – 4K/UHD
Ultra Plan: Rs950/- per month; video quality – 4K/UHD with the highest quality Audio.

You will be automatically charged with the subscription fee.
